Brrrrr!

Folks,
Winter is here in practice (in policy as of December 21). Please remember that our heaters in the classrooms are not as efficient as we would wish. Dress in layers. Wear a hat and scarf. Stay healthy for the upcoming Winter Break.

Turkey Day

Turkey Day is coming up on November 24th (the Wed. before Thanksgiving). This is our big, annual community celebration -- Shabazz's Homecoming! We welcome our alums, our current students' immediate families, and our district community partners. One of the main events of the day is the Talent Show. Audition signups have been slow-going. So, if you wish to perform at Turkey Day, please sign up for an audition spot on Denise's door. We will have several 1st hour auditions and lunch hour auds in the next two weeks. Auditions will close and the program will be finalized on Friday, November 19.

New Quarter Already

Wow, folks! It is already the start of the second quarter. Welcome to all of the new students to Shabazz. Welcome back to all of the returning students. We have an exciting and busy quarter ahead of us with Turkey Day and Winter Break. Let's get off to a great start and make this the best quarter EVER!

Fourth Quarter

Today was the first day of the last quarter of the 2009-2010 academic year. It appears that we are off to a great start. Most of the students were in attendance today. Senioritis was at a minimum. Students, overall, were in good spirits (as was the staff). Laughter was in abundance.

This final quarter of the year always flies along at an unbelievable pace. Enjoy it! Learn as much as you can. Try new ideas and activities. Challenge yourself to grow.

If you are a senior on schedule to graduate in June, take a bit of time to reflect on your high school experience. The graduation ceremony will soon be upon us. We hope that you will have a few things to say as we hand you the mic and watch you cross the stage to enter the next portion of a great life.

Super Dan Visits CLASS

Super(intendent) Dan Nerad visited my education leadership course on February 3. Responding to a series of questions generated by the leadership class students, Dr. Nerad offered a wealth of information about his role and district policy. Dr. Nerad gently challenged students to lead from the middle and collaborate with district decision-makers to change our state's current education funding structure, to generate a deeper sense of civic responsibility within our community, and to create better-informed perspectives on our alternative program.

First semester classes have come to a close. Thank you to all students who worked diligently to develop their skills and move forward toward their academic goals. For those who may have been stuck in old habits that created academic roadblocks, second semester is a new start for you. Let us hope that all embrace the opportunity to grow and take educated risks in the months ahead. Let us also hope that spring comes swiftly!

Welcome New Shabazz Students! New Student Orientation is on Monday (8-3).

Start of the Quarter All-School Meeting is on Tuesday, 1/26 -- 8:45 in the gym.
